Erika Ai-wen Johnson

Since 2016, I have been working with brands and individuals to translate their ideas, personalities, and important moments into visuals. Whether it’s for point-of-sale marketing, social media, or a personal life event, visuals give us all power to identify, communicate, and share our unique meanings with the world.

I am in love with creating concepts and discovering new perspectives, composing an image that brings it all together to capture a memory, a feeling, or an idea. Photography is connection — a bridge across people and personality, abstract concept and physical environment.

As a mixed-race Taiwanese American, I have often felt that I exist within the space between two different worlds. The liminality of this experience along with being in community with other mixed-race people have given me spaciousness, compassion, and sensitivity to humans and our complex dynamics and interactions with our environments and each other.

Apart from photography I enjoy making jewelry, writing poetry, whisking matcha, swimming, hiking, and hanging out with my partner Eric and our adventurous cat Magic.

If you’re interested in working together, feel free to contact me or send me an email at erikaoutsider@gmail.com.

I assist with setting up and taking photos, logistics, and location scouting. You can find my 35mm film photography at filmbyeric.com.

Originally from Kansas and then Florida, I moved west for the job opportunities and stayed for the mountains. In my free time, I enjoy brewing coffee, traveling, and volunteering for local non-profits.
